The 360° Foodservice “Charter of Trust” is a commitment to meet all relevant legal requirements in the EU and thereby ensure that consumers can enjoy their drinks safely.

A Charter of Trust in 5 propositions

A paper drinking straw is a new highly engineered product that should be made with quality raw materials.

Paper drinking straws are safe when they are fully compliant with all applicable EU and national law on materials in contact with foodstuffs.

Through this Charter of Trust companies declare full conformity with the relevant legislation, ensuring that straws are safe.

Sourcing, supplying or using straws from companies committed to the charter initiative guarantees you a straw you can trust.

The Trustmark for paper drinking straws now makes it easier to identify compliant products.

GUIDING PRINCIPLES

All members of 360° Foodservice commit to the Association’s Guiding Principles. In so doing, they guarantee a constant effort to manufacture, trade or use the highest quality products for EU and world markets.

OUR CHARTER COMMITMENTS

Companies that sign the 360° Foodservice Charter of Trust for Paper Drinking Straws also make the following specific commitments:

Commit to:

Sign up to and respect the 360° Foodservice Guiding Principles.
Comply fully with all relevant applicable EU and national laws where they operate, notably but not exclusively, all regulations relating to materials in contact with foodstuffs, labour rights, occupational health and safety and environmental protection.
Sign/make available a declaration to comply fully with all applicable EU and national laws referring, at a minimum, to the specific context of EU and national food contact material requirements detailed in the declaration section of this charter and any relevant appendices, applicable to the paper drinking straw, its constituents (paper, adhesive, ink) and the specific machines used to manufacture them.
In particular, ensure that any substance of concern is either absent, or is held within the limits set down by EU and/or national regulation and required/recommended for the production of paper drinking straws and their various components (paper, adhesive and ink) detailed in the declaration section of this charter and any relevant appendices.
Obtain all the mandatory or recommended certifications, as listed in the declaration section of this charter and any relevant appendices.
Be regularly audited against these requirements by independent, qualified certifying bodies, according to the timelines determined by these certifying bodies.

Provide paper drinking straw manufacturers in Europe with components that respect at a minimum, all relevant EU and national food contact material requirements detailed for paper, adhesive and printing ink, in the declaration section of this charter and any relevant appendices.
Ensure they do not contain any substance of concern, or that such substances are held within required/recommended levels, as detailed in the declaration section of this charter and any relevant appendices.
Obtain all the mandatory or recommended certifications, as listed in the declaration section of this charter and any relevant appendices.
Be regularly audited against these requirements by independent, qualified certifying bodies, according to the timelines determined by these certifying bodies.

Provide paper drinking straw manufacturers in Europe with components that respect at a minimum, all relevant EU and national food contact material requirements detailed for special machines in the declaration section of this charter and relevant appendices.
Ensure they do not contain any substance of concern, or that such substances are held within required/recommended levels, as detailed in the declaration section of this charter and any relevant appendices.
Obtain all the mandatory or recommended certifications, as listed in the declaration section of this charter and any relevant appendices.

Place on the EU market and/or trade in the EU only safe paper drinking straws that meet the requirements of relevant EU and national law in Europe and, whenever possible, to source products from manufacturers respecting this charter.

Purchase and offer to their consumers in the EU only safe paper drinking straws that meet the requirements of relevant EU and national law in Europe and, whenever possible, to source items from manufacturers, importers or distributors respecting this charter.

Company Declaration

Signatories of the Charter of Trust for Paper Drinking Straws declare themselves fully in compliance with all applicable EU and national legal requirements for materials in contact with foodstuffs. The list of relevant laws and technical guidance with which paper drinking straws and their constituents must comply when sold in the EU are laid out in the Company Declaration which is an integral part of the Charter of Trust.

2. Adhere to the Charter

By signing or endorsing the Charter of Trust you agree to be bound by its provisions. This will also involve producing evidence that you do meet all requirements in practice.

3. Spread the word

Let the world know you are part of the Charter of Trust initiative by spreading the word with your suppliers, distributors or customers. 360° Foodservice members will be able to do this notably by using the [future] Trust Mark and associated labelling scheme on marketing and other commercial communication material*.

* the use of the Trust Mark and associated labelling scheme is subject to the prior signature of a licensing agreement between your company and 360° Foodservice (and may be revoked by the licensor if a licensee does not respect its commitments in full).

Who is 360° Foodservice?

360° Foodservice is a not-for-profit association of companies. It is the material-neutral collaborative hub for the whole foodservice chain that aims to lead the responsible and sustainable evolution of the foodservice packaging sector in Europe. Our companies have a common vision about doing things better. We promote responsible reuse and sensible single use in delivering safe and sustainable solutions for serving food and beverages on the occasions when consumers eat or drink out-of-home or on-the-go. Total safety. Full hygiene. Zero waste. Zero litter.

Mission

Our companies manufacture, trade or use hygienic, safe and sustainable single use products and reusable systems for serving food and drinks. It is our mission to work to ensure that everyone involved in this endeavour is aware of the responsibility they bear towards consumers, towards the environment, towards employees and to their own businesses. So, part of our mission is to communicate with all stakeholders, including law-makers, about the quality and benefits of our products and how best they can be employed to help ensure the hygiene and safety of consumers, as well as greater respect for the environment.

The Charter of Trust is our guarantee to the market that we produce in a responsible way to ensure hygiene, safety and sustainability.

In this way, anyone can see who commits to safety and quality by respecting legal requirements for materials and products in contact with foodstuffs. We call on companies that are not members of the Association to endorse the Charter and make the same commitments as we do. Those who sign up are listed here also.

A Trustmark for businesses

A Trust Mark and associated labelling scheme for paper drinking straws now make it even easier for businesses in the food service supply chain to know who is committed to safety and compliance with legal requirements for food contact materials. The scheme allows 360° Foodservice companies that commit to the Charter of Trust to use the trademark and the labels on packaging, on printed and online marketing and sales materials, as well as on administrative documents like order forms or invoices. It is backed by business-to-business communication campaigns and information programmes to EU and national regulators, market surveillance services and control authorities..
